WHAT TO EXPECT

At your consultation, you can expect:

Open Discussion: First, you’ll meet with a Dr. Ellie Shadmehr for a diagnostic examination.

Initial Exam: Next, your doctor will take a close look at the affected tooth and will use our state-of-the-art 3D scanning equipment and take x-rays to identify any issues that can not be seen by the naked eye.

Treatment Plan & Advice: These scans and images allow your doctor to create a precise, custom treatment plan that will alleviate your pain, and restore the health of your tooth. This is also a great time to ask your doctor any questions you may have. They are always happy to give you candid advice and recommendations.

Schedule Your Next Visit: If time permits, and if you choose, it may be possible to see you for same-day treatment. Of course, there is never any pressure to proceed with treatment right away. You will be given time and space to decide how you would like to proceed with treatment.

When preparing for your consultation, here are some things you will want to remember:

What to expect after root canal treatment?

Directly after your visit, it is normal to feel some tenderness or discomfort. This should subside within a week, but in the meantime, we recommend you minimize your discomfort by taking an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If your discomfort persists for several days after your endodontic procedure, please contact our office. Our team will ask you a few questions over the phone to see what may be the cause and, if necessary, book a follow up appointment for you.

Post-Surgery Care Instructions:
A Guide to Your Recovery

If you’ve had a surgical treatment at our office, it is important that you follow your doctor’s specific, individualized instructions to ensure proper healing. However, there are a few things all patients should keep in mind after a surgical procedure:

  • Swelling: It's normal to experience swelling after surgery as it's a sign of your body's healing process. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack over the surgical area for up to 30 minutes. Continue applying ice for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off during the first 6 hours post-surgery.

  • Keep your head elevated while sleeping for the first couple of nights to further reduce swelling.

  • Saline Rinses: Perform periodic saline rinses (a mix of warm water and salt) to keep the surgical site clean.

  • Protect the Surgical Area: Avoid eating near the surgical site to prevent dislodging sutures or introducing bacteria. Stick to a soft food diet on the day of and the day after your surgery.

  • Numbness: If your mouth is still numb, steer clear of hot fluids to avoid burns. Wait until the numbness subsides before consuming hot foods or drinks.

  • Rest and Recovery: Allow your body to heal by resting, especially important in the first 48 hours post-surgery. Avoid strenuous activities to ensure a smooth recovery. By following these guidelines, you're taking an important step towards a swift and smooth recovery. If you have any concerns or notice anything unusual during your recovery, please contact our office immediately.

  • Other than this, simply continue to brush and floss normally (avoiding the surgical site until your next visit). As always, if anything seems abnormal or uncomfortable, give us a call right away! Our team is standing by and we are always happy to speak with you and answer any questions you may have to give you peace of mind.
